FOR WHOM?

– People of all ages, backgrounds and ALL proficiency levels (beginners, music students, professional musicians) will benefit from participating in such a workshop.

– Participants are required to either silently observe or use their voice, or to bring their own instrument.

– The workshop is not suitable for young children.

– It is NOT a WARSAW IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA or SOUND IN SPACE ORCHESTRA rehearsal.

GOAL

To enhance confidence, willingness to explore and experiment, overall musical ability. This framework is an essential complement to the traditional approach towards music creation and improvisation forms.

UNIQUE APPROACH

We employ several novel approaches in musical teaching:

– Active (Attentive) Listening – the first rule is to be focused and non-judgmental, practising 'Open-Eared Listening’.

– Dynamic Awareness – exploring the full dynamic range of the instrument in the context of solo, duo, and large group improvisation.

– Pitch Relationships – exploring the relationship of pitch: harmonic and discordant.

– Rhythmic Games – playing in different time signatures and combinations.

– Sound Association – associating sounds, both abstract and melodious. For example, combining the industrial sound of a city with a fleeting flute or the drone of a machine with that of a cello playing simultaneously.

– Instant Composing – spontaneous music creation.

BENEFITS

– We immerse participants in a safe environment to explore aspects of sound-making that they may not have space for in other situations and introduce participants to new formulas and approaches to music-making

– Participants will develop a deeper understanding of the relationship of sound, how it functions, interrelates, and has cause and effect. They will learn how melody interacts with rhythm, how abstraction can work with melodic content, and how music can combine many differing forms in its creation.
