Vexations: Revisited

VEXATIONS: REVISITED ist eine durchgehende, umfassende, ortsspezifische und partizipatorische, musiktheatrale Performance. In etwa 24 Stunden ohne Unterbrechung werden Pianist*innen Erik Saties Stück für Klavier „Vexations” für das Publikum aufführen, während sie in einem speziell konzipierten, semi transparenten, von innen leuchtenden Kubus sitzen. Der Kubus selbst fungiert wie eine innere Bühne, ein geschützter, intimer Raum. Das Publikum befindet sich um den Kubus herum und die Zuschauer können kommen und gehen wie sie möchten. Die Performance lässt die weniger bekannte Komposition des französischen Komponisten Erik Saties auferstehen. Eine Komposition, die als erstes Beispiel konzeptueller Arbeit in der klassischen Musik gilt. Das Stück wurde erst 1893 komponiert und im Jahr 1949 von John Cage wiederentdeckt.

VEXATIONS: REVISITED by Despina Apostolou, Monika Zyla (Konzept, Künstlerische Leitung), Alex Baumueller (Konzept, Bühnenbild), Natalia Orendain (Bühnenbild) and Andoz Krishnadas (Photography), students from the HfMDK and guests.

VEXATIONS: REVISITED is a durational, immersive and participatory performance. Over 24 hours, pianists play in succession Erik Satie’s piece „Vexations” for an audience while sitting in a specially conceived semi-transparent, illuminated white cube. The cube functions simultaneously as an inner stage, providing the pianists with a sheltering environment. The audience is seated in a space around the cube and is free to come and go as they please. The piano’s resonating chamber emerges from the front wall of the cube. The corpus of the piano is visible from outside while the front part is hidden inside and discernible only in form of shadows. The performance resurrects the infamous composition by French composer Erik Satie, widely regarded as the first instance a conceptual work of classical music. The piece was first composed in 1893 and rediscovered by John Cage in 1949.
